Why? ¦ How to Do It ¦ Facts ¦ |
How to Achieve AccessibilityIf you do not yet have a website, but you are considering one now or at some point in the future, we will cover the relevant points later in this page. If you already have a website the first thing to do is identify whether or not your website meets the criteria laid down by the Web Accessibility Initiative. If it does, then you do not need to take any remedial action but if it doesn't, you need to take action to rectify the situation as soon as possible. In order to identfy what needs to be done, you will need to carry out, or have carried out on your behalf, a Web Accessibility Review of your website. Carlian Web Services offer such a review as part of our services and details can be found on our Consultancy Page in the Services section of this website. Once you have identified what needs to be done, you need to decide how you are going to go about putting things right. You designed your own websiteIf you have carried out the design of your own website, then you may well feel capable of conducting the necessary changes yourself. If this is the case, and we have conducted the Accessibility Review on your behalf, submit the site changes to us and we will check them again, FREE OF CHARGE, against the criteria we used initially. You employ somebody to maintain your websiteYou should get this person to carry out the changes. If they are unable to do so, the first consideration must be to train them sufficiently in order for them to be able to do this. You should allow them time to carry out this training or familiarisation of the requirements as it will have potential long term benefits for your company or organisation. You employed a third party designerYou should make the Web Accessibility Review available to your designer and ask them to carry out the remedial work for you. Websites that are less than two years old should have had basic accessibility features built in and therefore the designer should be asked to update the site either free of charge or at a reduced cost. If the website is older than this, then there is a reasonable consideration the designer was not aware of accessibility issues at the time the site was designed. In these cases it is highly likely there will be a significant cost implication in updating the website. Employ Carlian Web Services to do the workWe can do this, but we would prefer not to. Each and every designer has their own way of applying the code that goes to make up a website. Sometimes this is straightforward, but more often than not this individuality can make the application of accessibility options both difficult and very time consuming. As such, it will often be very expensive to carry out such work and it may be prudent to think about a complete re-design of your website if you are considering this option. Whilst this might sound excessive, it can often be more cost effective to have this done and has the added potential benefit of giving a tired looking site a facelift. |
